Our Story
Bicultural Approach. Community Roots. Global Possibilities.
At Bert Hsu Academy, we believe every child deserves a year round education that is rigorous, joyful, and rooted in cultural connection. Our students are immersed in both Chinese and American cultural traditions, developing not just academic skills but also self-confidence, global awareness, and grounded values. We’re more than a bilingual school we’re bicultural and a vibrant community of learners, families, and educators committed to helping children thrive.
Our unique approach blends the best of East and West: structure and flexibility, discipline and creativity, heritage and innovation. We help students become curious thinkers and kind people who are ready for wherever life takes them— college, career, and tomorrow’s challenges.
Our Program
Our daily and weekly schedules blend quiet study time with active play time to achieve consistency with variety and flexibility:
-
Younger students have shorter classes and more recess
-
Older students get longer blocks for deeper focus
-
Mondays and Tuesdays are core academic days
-
Wednesdays and Fridays include arts, gardening, SEL, and cooking
-
Thursdays are reserved for field trips
Each semester, we also plan “irregular” weeks—like retreats, service projects, and travel—to keep learning fresh and meaningful. Summer session is built into the year, with a lighter, more activity-based schedule to prevent learning loss while keeping the fun.
Our Campus
Perched on sunny Potrero Hill, our campus offers views of downtown and plenty of space to learn and play. Class sizes are capped under 20, even in classrooms built for more.
Our yard doubles as a gym, court, chalk canvas, and garden. We’re two blocks from both Jackson Park & Playground and Potrero Hill Rec Center—and right next door to the public library.

Our Team
Our teaching team brings together experienced educators and passionate specialists who believe learning should be rigorous, joyful, and meaningful. From core academics to enrichment subjects, they guide students with warmth, high expectations, and a deep respect for both Chinese and American cultures.
